What is Matcha and why is it so special?
Matcha is a type of green tea. It differs from normal green tea as it is grown in the shade (usually in Japan or China) to increase the chlorophyll content (the thing that makes plants green). Having a higher chlorophyll content means matcha green tea usually has a deeper green colour than normal green teas signifying more antioxidants and phytochemicals. “Phyto – chemicals” translates to “plant – chemicals” which are chemicals plants posses with antimicrobial, antifungal and insecticidal properties and help protect the plants from insects and infections. When we eat plants like matcha which have high amounts of phytochemicals, it stresses our body. This is a positive stress (just like how exercise is a positive stress), so after eating these plant chemicals our body recovers and gets stronger.

Matcha green tea is a special tea even in the way it is harvested. The leaves are hand picked and the stems and the veins are removed (this is important as the leaves contain the highest amount of phytochemicals), the leaves are dried then ground to make a super fine powder. Unlike black teas green teas are not cooked/fermented therefore more of their phytochemicals remain intake. Unfortunately, all this extra preparation makes good quality matcha an expensive ingredient, but its benefits are well worth it. Especially when Protein World have added 4grams per serving to the Slender Blend for the price!!

The Benefits of Matcha Fat Burning Matcha contains EGCG which is a catechin (type of powerful plant nutrient) that has a thermogenic effect on the body. This means that it helps to speed up the metabolism which can aid fat burning and is the reason why we use green tea in our regular flavours of Slender Blend.

Energy and Focus Matcha contains caffeine and L-theanine, which work together to produce a slow release of energy rather than the usual caffeine crash that most people experience from coffee. Matcha is also said to help improve focus whilst creating a state of calm in the brain – sounds wonderful! Matcha After a Night Out or Binge In the book Anti-Cancer, Dr. Servan-Schreiber explains that this special green tea acts as a detoxifier for the body because it activates mechanisms in the liver that can eliminate cancerous toxins from the body more rapidly.

Matcha - an Anti-Cancer Food Green tea and especially matcha is know for its numerous polyphenols called catechins (types of phytochemical). One of these catechins epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is one of the most powerful nutritional molecules against cancer. Firstly, it blocks cell receptors that signal to cancer cells to invaded and secondly it reduces the formation of new blood vessels by cancerous growths. Tumours need a supply of blood to grow so by stopping their ability to form blood vessels their growth can be slowed.

Matcha - 10 Cups of Green Tea Matcha is also unique amongst teas in the way that is it drank/consumed. Unlike normal teas where you only consume the water after the leaves are boiled and strained, matcha is stirred into the boiling water and you consume the lot. This is one of the reasons drinking one cup of matcha is considered to have the same positive health benefits as drinking 10 cups of green tea!!

Matcha in Your Daily Routine Matcha is also a very versatile ingredient and does not have to only be consumed as tea, for example, it can be used in baking, cold drinks and desserts. We have added 4grams per serving to our Slender Blend, so you can enjoy the benefits of matcha without the preparation time associated with making a Matcha Tea or Latte. Consume the Matcha Slender Blend as a meal replacement shake, post workout snack or use in cooking.
