TOP TIPS TO KEEP IT HEALTHIER THIS CHRISTMAS

Now don’t get me wrong, I know Christmas Day is about relaxing and indulging but we all know that all too familiar slump you get at the end of it. The wine bottles are empty, there’s only Bounties left in the Celebrations box and the top button on your jeans hasn’t done up since lunchtime. Whilst we are aware this might be commonplace it’s not the only way to spend Christmas Day. If you follow these simple tips I guarantee, you’ll not only feel better throughout the day but you can start your Boxing Day celebrations feeling fresh and ready for round 2!

Breakfast is key
More to the point, what type of breakfast. High carbohydrate breakfasts such as toast can cause your blood sugar levels to rapidly increase resulting in a spike in your insulin levels leaving you grappling for the biscuit tin far too early for anyone’s liking. This Christmas day, opt for a high protein breakfast such as a spinach, tomato and red pepper omelette with a side order of smoked salmon. Not only will the protein in this keep you fuller for longer but you’re increasing your vitamin and mineral intake from the vegetables as well as getting those all-important omega-3 fatty acids from the salmon. Win Win. You could also opt for a bowl of warming Slender Porridge. The low GI oats will release energy slowly throughout the day to keep you awake until dinner time turkey sandwiches!

Stay hydrated
With water…not wine, champagne, brandy or any other festive tipple to hand. Feel free to have a few glasses but alcohol only dehydrates you more contributing to that customary Boxing Day hangover from hell. So, spare yourself the embarrassment of slurring your words pre 10am and opt for the water- for the first half of the day at least.

Avoid snacking
Now I know this one is difficult when you’ve got Quality Streets flying at you left right and centre and the mincepies seem to be appearing from nowhere. If you can, try and hold out to lunch (if that’s when you have your Christmas meal) and you’ll actually be hungry when the time comes.

Go for 1 portion of Christmas dinner
“Those pigs in blankets aren’t going to eat themselves” as we reach for our 6th one having already polished off an entire plate. We’ve all been there. Overeating at Christmas has become norm. However, this year we’d advise to go for 1 round and 1 round only. Control your portion size. Leave room for that all-important Christmas pudding!

Stay active
And no, walking to and from the fridge does not count. Try and get out for a walk at some point throughout the day, even if it’s just an amble. Even moderate exercise can benefit both your cardiovascular and mental health so wrap up warm and brave that December weather, you will reap the benefits!

Whilst Christmas is about spending time with loved ones and having fun, you want to feel good whilst you’re doing it and following these simple points will allow you to do just that. Make this year the first of many where you put your health first and I promise you will not regret it!
